Eyes closed, Paul dozed, holding Kaya close. He had no desire to move, not from her arms or the bed. The bed where Madaam Nephthys had, indeed, provided clean sheets for an exorbitant price.

Worth every bob he paid.

Perfectly content in a way he’d never experienced before and didn’t quite understand, Paul foresaw no reason to ever leave this position.

Except maybe for food. Possibly. Maybe.

“What is bitch whore?” Kaya’s voice was soft, sleepy, but still alert.

His eyes flew open and he choked, jerking back to look at her. “What?”

“And what does fucking rip you to shreds mean?”

Paul blinked down at her. He’d been lost in memories of the sounds she’d made. Those hungry sounds from the back of her throat that urged him on and only made him want her again. Kaya raised her head from his chest and looked at him with those beautiful dark eyes.

The innocence belied their naked bodies currently entwined on the small bed. The curiosity, however, did not surprise him. Innocent curiosity—yes, that described Kaya perfectly.

“Where did you hear that?” He thought he’d managed to sound calm, inquisitive. Not stunned.

“The man who tried to—to take me.” Kaya shuddered, and he held her closer.

Paul pressed her head back to his chest despite the midday heat. He felt the warmth of her body against his, the puff of her breath as it fanned over his chest. A small part of the tension curling through him eased with her, alive and close and whole, in his arms.

He didn’t want to relive the longest moments of his life. He didn’t want his mind’s eye showing him that heart-stopping instant when the man had grabbed her. When he lifted her from behind, intent on taking her. Paul had been too far away to stop him. Then the man’s accomplices attacked him and Anatoly, and the world went to hell.

Paul shifted so Kaya lay fully against him, one leg over his thighs, her soft breasts pressed to his chest. His fingers flexed on her shoulder, the back of her head, and he tried to find the words to answer her.

His throat closed with that earlier terror.

“They were curses.” He swallowed hard and tried to infuse humor into his voice. He doubted Tahir had ever cursed in front of her—if the man did so at all.

Paul had never felt such paralyzing fear. It clawed at his throat and pierced his heart. Different than watching his fellow officers slaughter innocents. Even when he saw his friend in the pile of bodies. That moment when he realized he was too far from Kaya when she needed him—

“Curses?” Kaya lifted her head, frowning. “Like some sort of pagan magic?”

“No.” He laughed then but didn’t release her, too afraid if he did so, she’d disappear.

Paul kissed her, slow and deep, tasting all the glorious flavors that made her Kaya. He didn’t think he’d ever grow tired of that. Of her. When he pulled back, breathing heavily, he was not the least bit surprised to realize he’d hardened for her again.
